The Easiest Way to Control Windows File Explorer Folder Views

Windows resets your folder views constantly. WinSetView fixes that once and for all — globally, instantly, without touching the registry manually.

🪟

What Is WinSetView?

WinSetView is a free portable Windows utility by LesFerch that sets default folder views in File Explorer globally — across all folder types including Documents, Pictures, Downloads, and more — in a single click.

👤

Who Is It For?

Built for Windows users frustrated with Explorer reverting folder views, IT admins who need consistent views across accounts, and anyone who wants Details view everywhere without setting it folder by folder.

💡

Why Was It Created?

Windows lets you customize folder views per folder only — and resets them without warning. WinSetView solves this by writing to the FolderTypes registry key, which Windows updates do not reset.

Everything WinSetView Does Out of the Box

All features completely free. No account, no activation, no strings attached.

🌐

Global Folder View

Apply Details, List, Icons, or Tiles to every folder type in Windows simultaneously with one Submit click.

📦

Fully Portable

No installation required. Unzip and run from anywhere — Desktop, USB drive, or network share.

🗂️

Per Folder Type Control

Set different views per folder type. Details everywhere except Pictures in Large Icons? Easy.

📋

Custom Column Headings

Choose exactly which columns show in Details view — Name, Size, Date, Type — and set their order.

🔒

No Admin Rights

All changes go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Any standard Windows user account can run WinSetView.

↩️

Backup and Restore

Auto-backup before every run. Restore to any previous state in one click. Full safety net included.

🔍

Disable Grouping

Turn off file grouping in all folder views and search results for a clean, flat file list everywhere.

🖱️

Classic Right-Click Menu

Restore the full classic Windows 10 right-click context menu in Windows 11 — one checkbox.

🔄

Reset to Defaults

Changed your mind? Reset all Explorer folder views back to Windows defaults any time.

Set Up WinSetView in 5 Simple Steps

No installation required. You'll be done in under two minutes.

1

Download and Extract the ZIP

Download WinSetView-main.zip and extract it to any folder — Desktop, Documents, or a USB drive all work fine.

2

Close All Open Applications

For best results, close all open apps before running. Open apps can prevent some dialog views from updating correctly.

3

Run WinSetView.hta

Double-click WinSetView.hta to launch the app. The interface opens showing all folder types and view options.

Double-click → WinSetView.hta
4

Choose Your Global View

Select your preferred default from the Global dropdown — Details is recommended. Customize individual folder types by unchecking "Inherit" next to any folder.

5

Click Submit

Press Submit. WinSetView backs up your settings, applies the new views to all folder types, and restarts Explorer. Done!

How WinSetView Sets Folder Views System-Wide

No magic — just smart use of registry keys Windows already supports.

01

You Choose a View

Select Details, List, Icons, Tiles, or Content as your global default from the WinSetView interface.

02

Reads Folder Types

The app reads all folder type GUIDs from the Windows registry — covering every type including Downloads, Search, and OneDrive.

03

Backup Created

Before any changes, WinSetView backs up current registry values to a restore file automatically.

04

Registry Updated

Preferences are written to HKEY_CURRENT_USER using FolderTypes — not Bags — so Windows updates don't reset them.

05

Explorer Restarts

WinSetView restarts Windows Explorer so changes take effect immediately — no reboot needed.

06

All Folders Updated

Every folder you open from now uses your chosen view by default — new folders, network shares, file dialogs included.
